A former juvenile court judge in Luzerne County, Pa., who accepted nearly $1 million to send juveniles to for-profit detention centers has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. The court also ordered the former judge, Mark Ciavarella Jr., to pay $1.17 million in restitution.
Our heart goes out to the families and children who have been victimized by evil cloaked in robes of justice.
Shame has fallen upon the courts of Pennsylvania and lives have been altered. The scales of justice have been turned on it’s head, and the devil on the alter has struck his gavel one last time.
In what became known as the “kids for cash” scandal, Ciavarella and another former judge, Michael Conahan, received payments from the owner and builder of two privately-run juvenile detention facilities to close down the county’s own juvenile detention center and direct juvenile offenders to the private facilities, the Christian Science Monitor reports.
Mark Ciavarella Jr and Michael Conahan are two men that participated in modern day slavery. Selling children into bondage, putting money above humanity, they prove to be of the evilist walks of life.
The communities of Pennsylvania, and across our nation, must realize that our courts, and government is not the holy elect but as us men of folly and error.
“There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.” — John Adams, 1772
